Uttaradhikar is a signature showcase presented by BIPA to honor and celebrate the remarkable achievements of individual students. This special program provides a platform for standout performers to share their artistry, personal growth, and dedication with the community. Through dance, music, or singing, each participant takes the audience on a journey that reflects their unique talents, hard work, and commitment to preserving and promoting our heritage. At BIPA, Uttaradhikar marks a turning point. It is reserved for students who have completed our rigorous five-year curriculum and have been selected by their instructors to step forward as fully trained artists. Taking the stage is not just a performance, it is a declaration that they are ready to share their artistry with the world.

“I am Aurene and I have been very honored to be recognized amongst my peers to showcase my talents in both singing and dancing through BIPA's Uttaradhikar Shows. My first Uttaradhikar was in singing in 2003 and sometime after that in dancing in 2008. In hindsight it was a lot of fun as well as a great learning experience. Through tremendous efforts from our mentors/teachers, family members and supporters we were able to pull off successful shows. Preparing for these solo debuts required immense dedication, discipline, and emotional investment. Unlike group performances, being a solo performer meant bearing full responsibility for the execution, interpretation, and connection with the audience. The process began months in advance, with countless hours spent refining technique, building stamina, and developing the choreographies. Behind every polished movement were hours of repetition, self-correction, and pushing through both physical exhaustion and self-doubt. As a dancer you have to learn to train not just your body, but also the mind, cultivating focus, resilience, and a deep understanding of the music and narrative that you want to portray.

The journey for singing was nothing less compared to dancing, as it demanded just as much focus, unwavering dedication, persistence, and passion. There were numerous hours spent on vocal training to build range, and control. Countless rehearsal time—both alone and with instrumentalists/ tracks (cassettes, recorder) not to give away my age — was all to perfect timing, transitions, and expression. Behind each Uttaradhikar was my emotional readiness and a strong sense of identity. Each time I realized through my performance it was my storytelling, vulnerability, and connection with the people I wanted to share that with. I felt a sense of power and courage to stand alone under the spotlight and share something personal with the audience. Expressing and understanding the meaning behind each song, each dance and finding a way to make it uniquely mine. Everything my teachers/ mentors and I poured into the performances was a powerful blend of hard work, heart, and artistry. So ultimately we reaped what we've all worked so tirelessly for amazing performances and unforgettable memories.” —Saki Baxter Aurene

A Look Into The Uttaradhikar - 20

This year’s Uttaradhikar was a powerful testament to dedication, artistry, and the living legacy of BIPA’s musical tradition.

Our featured performers, Fahmin Rahman and Kamilla Alam, spent months preparing, immersing themselves in diverse styles of music and refining every detail of their craft. The result was a concert that not only showcased their exceptional talent, but also the discipline, passion, and perseverance that brought them to this stage.

We were honored to speak with Kamilla about her journey, her growth, and what this milestone means to her. Fahmin’s performance spoke just as strongly, radiating authenticity and the depth of her training.

“I felt extremely honored. I’ve always dreamed of having an Uttaradhikar, and I’ve always looked up to the past performers. I never thought I would get this opportunity, so when I did I knew how important it was. I was extremely dedicated to the process; I would practice every day, and I really enjoyed being able to work with Selima Auntie one on one. The experience really expanded my knowledge of singing, performing, and engaging with the audience. Not only was the performance extremely rewarding, but so was the entire learning process.

I really appreciate the family and community that BIPA provides for me. Whenever I feel lost, confused, or lonely, BIPA is always there for me. Being a part of BIPA allows me to explore and express my culture more. I take extreme pride in being a Bangladeshi-American, and I love being able to preserve my culture and teach future generations about it.

BIPA has taught me that if you love something, don’t let it go. Singing and dancing have been passions of mine since I was a child, and without them, I feel empty and lost. I also learned that you’re never done being a student; even during the process of my Uttaradhikar, I was learning new skills every day, and I’m still not done learning from Selima Auntie.

I also wouldn’t have been able do this without my mom who is my role model, She’s such a strong person who never gives up. She’s family-oriented, hardworking, and always maintains a positive attitude. She inspires me every day.

To everyone who joined us, thank you for witnessing the continuation of a rich cultural inheritance, one that Fahmin and Kamilla now carry proudly into the future.
